IV Sedation

INTRAVENOUS SEDATION (“TWILIGHT SEDATION”)

Our office offers patients the option of Intravenous Sedation or Intravenous Anesthesia (commonly called “Twilight Sedation”). Intravenous Sedation provides pain management, comfort and calm for surgical procedures.   Patients are not fully asleep, but are comfortable, calm and relaxed, drifting in and out of sleep – a “twilight sleep”.

Intravenous Sedation is administered by the doctor.  The patient is monitored by the doctor and the assistive staff throughout the procedure.

HOW IS THE IV SEDATION ADMINISTERED?

A thin needle is introduced into a vein in the arm or hand. The needle is attached to an intravenous tube through which medication is administered by the doctor. 

The goal of IV sedation is pain and anxiety management.  It is very safe, much safer than oral sedation; with IV sedation a constant “drip” is maintained via the intravenous tube; medications are administered as needed.
